A kit of the British Centurion tank in the form of the first production version, in 1:35 scale from the Taiwanese manufacturer AFV Club. AFV Club has long focused on British armor and its molds are among the most detailed in this area. The model is intended to be glued and painted; the particular contents of the package, the number of parts and the extent of the additional materials are stated on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions.
The Centurion was created at the end of the Second World War as a heavy infantry tank of a new concept, meant to combine resistant armor with good mobility. The first production version carried a 17-pounder gun and, in the side of the turret, an additional 20 mm gun. The running gear consisted of paired road wheels with Horstmann suspension enclosed in side units, which became the hallmark of the whole family. The type gradually developed into one of the most widespread postwar tanks and served in many armies for several decades.
Work from the bottom up: first complete the hull and the running gear, because it is precisely the suspension and the track tension that are hard to set right once the hull is closed. Fit the side armor skirts over the running gear only after a dry test — they determine how the tank will sit in profile. Glue the plastic parts with thin cement for plastic drawn into the seam by capillary action, not by applying it to the surface. Lay down a primer before painting; it unifies the surface and brings out any shortcomings in the seams. Spray the base shade with an airbrush in thin coats and suggest the lightening of horizontal surfaces with a lighter tone. After clear coating with gloss varnish and applying the decals, move on to a wash in the recesses and to pigments for mud and dust effects; the lower hull and the running gear deserve markedly heavier weathering than the upper surfaces.
