A scenic ground for a diorama in 1:35 scale with a column motif. Verticals are among the strongest compositional items that can be put into a scene: they break the horizontal line of the board, give the viewer a sense of scale, and a model placed beside them suddenly looks genuinely large.
Columns are worked with differently from a flat backdrop. They work best off the axis of the scene rather than exactly in the middle, and placed so that one of them partly hides the view of the model: the viewer then walks around the scene looking for a better angle, which is exactly the effect a diorama is after. Check the arrangement dry and preferably through a camera lens as well.
A stone surface benefits from variety: a base shade, two or three irregular shades applied in patches with a sponge over it, and only then a unifying filter. A dry brush draws out the shafts and the capitals, and a flowed-in color deepens the joints and the cracks. At the foot of the columns let dust settle and possibly a hint of moss, because that is where moisture stays the longest.
The column ground is sold on its own and unpainted; the finished models, the figures and the paints for completing the scene are chosen by the modeler.
