A plastic kit of the German short take-off aircraft Fieseler Fi-156U Storch in the unusual 1:35 scale from Hobby Boss.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit in a large scale that is rather an exception with aircraft and suits mainly where the aircraft is to stand next to ground vehicles. Hobby Boss lists the Storch as a whole family of boxings and this one adds a further version. The large format means more room for the cockpit and for the rendering of the fabric skin.
The Storch was designed as an observation and liaison aircraft with exceptional take-off qualities. The wing was complemented along its whole span by automatic leading-edge slots and by large flaps, so the machine took off and landed on ground where another aircraft would not even have started its run. Long landing gear travel absorbed touchdowns onto rough terrain. It was powered by the air-cooled eight-cylinder Argus As 10, and the glazed cockpit gave the crew a view downward and to the sides. That is precisely why it served for liaison, for reconnaissance, for evacuating the wounded and for carrying staff officers, and became one of the best-known German aircraft of the Second World War.
A large scale reveals every detail, so it pays to spend time on the cockpit before the fuselage is closed. The glazing is extensive and masking takes longer than on an ordinary fighter; the frames can also be handled with thin strips of masking tape. Glue the tube frame and the wing struts on only after painting, so that they do not have to be handled under the airbrush. The fabric surfaces gain credibility from very subtle toning between the ribs, not from hard shadows.
The box contains parts to be assembled, not a finished aircraft; the paints and glue are to be obtained separately.
