The figure 1:35 Fireman N°1 opens the numbered line of firefighters that Black Dog offers alongside its military subjects. It is a single casting in modeling resin, supplied without paint. In 1:35 scale it is not only armor that is built but fire engines and utility hardware too, so the figure has somewhere to belong.
An incident scene has one great advantage for a builder: it carries a story in itself. Whereas a soldier standing beside a tank needs context, a firefighter at a vehicle says immediately what is going on. It is also a rewarding subject for collectors outside military themes; a museum veteran of fire service hardware with a crew looks entirely different in a display case from an empty vehicle.
Turnout gear tends to be dark and smooth, which is treacherous: in a small scale it merges into a shapeless mass. It helps to work from a dark base toward lighter edges and folds, with very fine dry brushing added. If the casting has reflective elements suggested on it, paint them last in a saturated, well-covering tone; it is they that give the figure its recognizability. The helmet can be left with a slight gloss, while the rest is unified with a matte varnish.
