A flange is a circular connecting collar on the end of a pipe section. Two such collars are bolted together over a gasket, so the pipework can be taken apart at any time and a faulty run replaced - which is why they are seen at every turn in refineries, heating plants, pumping stations, ships' engine rooms and ordinary factories. Real pipework never runs as one endless tube: it has joints, branches and valves, and it is the flanges that divide it into sections.
