Masks for the national insignia and walkways of the Fw 190A-6 in 1:35 scale from Omask. The crosses and the walking surfaces are sprayed with paint instead of being applied as decals.

A set of self-adhesive masks from Omask for a model of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-6 fighter. According to the name it covers two things: the national insignia and the walkways on the wing. The masks are stuck onto a finished painted surface, sprayed over with paint and lifted off once dry.
On a real aircraft a national insignia is sprayed paint, not an applied film. That is exactly why a sprayed version looks different on a model: it has no edge of carrier film that would give itself away by its shine on matte camouflage, it does not shrink the moment a decal softener dries, and it follows engraved panel lines, riveting and any unevenness without trouble. The set also makes it easy to weather the insignia, because a sprayed surface takes sanding, abrasion and a wash just like the rest of the airframe, so the marking does not stay conspicuously new on an otherwise worn aircraft.
A multi-color insignia is sprayed in layers: the lighter base first, then the mask for the dark part is added and sprayed over with the second color. The key is to place the second layer precisely, so handle the model as little as possible while it dries and mark the position of the part before sticking it down. Apply the paint in thin passes, otherwise a ridge forms at the edge which visually blurs the alignment of the two coats. Let the camouflage cure thoroughly before masking and reduce the tack of the film by briefly sticking it to the back of your hand.
