Crosses and walkways sprayed through a mask

The set holds masks for spraying the markings on a model of the Bf 109G-6 in 1:35 scale, specifically for the crosses and for the strips that mark where it is permitted to walk on the wing. Both belong to the areas where a finished decal shows most: the cross on the fuselage runs across panel lines and rivets, and the strip at the wing root runs over a bend and over a fillet.

Why a mask in a large scale

Sprayed markings have no carrier film, so they do not shine under a matte varnish and nowhere end in a visible edge. In 1:35 scale the cross on a model is large and every irregularity along its edge shows at first glance, with a decal above all where the film does not settle into the engraving. A mask gets around this difficulty and the resulting marking is in the same paint as the rest of the finish. The 1:35 scale appears only rarely with aircraft, while with military vehicles it is the most common of all.

Application procedure

• mask only onto a dry and smooth base, never onto fresh paint
• press the edges of the mask down carefully, above all over engraving and rivets
• spray the paint in thin coats perpendicular to the surface, otherwise it runs under the edge
• take the mask off shortly after the paint has set, not after several days
• tidy the edge with a fine brush if needed and unify the surface with varnish
