The MG 34 machine gun of 7.92 millimeters caliber was during the Second World War the core of the firepower of a German infantry squad, and everything else revolved around it. By itself, however, it was not enough: the gunner needed men beside him who would bring the boxes with belts of ammunition and the case with the spare barrel and keep the fire going as long as the position held. With airborne units this rule held doubly, because after a jump the whole load was carried in the hands and on the back. In photographs the ammunition carrier therefore rarely stands upright; he tends to be leaning to one side as he balances the weight of the boxes.
The figure in 1:35 scale completes the crew of a machine gun position or a group on the move. It suits everywhere a scene is to tell a story: at a trench, at a shot-up vehicle, in the ruins of a village.
Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down, watching out meanwhile for the thin straps and buckles. Before painting, wash and degrease the figure and choose the glue according to the material of the parts. First seat the figure dry on a base and find its center of gravity, so that it stands naturally in the final scene. You recognize the helmet of German paratroopers by the missing rim above the forehead, which is a rewarding detail: a matte shade, fine scuffs along the edges and a darker wash around the strap will bring it to life better than a saturated color. Leave the hands and the face to the end.
