About product

Crew of a German submarine of the Second World War, set number 1, 1:72

The set of figures from the Czech brand Black Dog is cast in resin and completes models of German submarines in 1:72 scale. It is not a model of a submarine but an accessory in its own right meant for the conning tower and the upper deck, where the figures will give the huge hull a scale that can be grasped.

Why to add a crew

A model of a submarine in 1:72 scale is very long, and without a human figure a viewer will not realize its real size. A few figures on the bridge solve that problem at once and at the same time suggest a situation - a passage on the surface, a watch or a return to harbor. The manufacturer also makes a second set of the same range, so the crew can be extended.

The real subject

German submarines of the Second World War spent a considerable part of a voyage on the surface, and a manned conning tower was therefore their typical image. The men on the bridge wore waterproof coats and jackets, caps or knitted caps, and they had binoculars at their disposal for watching the horizon. It is precisely the austere, functional dress that makes these figures a rewarding subject for painting: the work is above all with dark tones, with contrasts and with the sheen of a damp surface.

Building and painting tips

Wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap, so that the remains of the mold release agent are removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife, level the surfaces with a file and protect your breathing when sanding resin. Make the joints with super glue; small gaps need only be filled and sanded over. In the reduction to 1:72 a figure is a little over 2 centimeters tall, so it pays to paint with contrast rather than with detail: a basic tone, a dark wash into the folds and a light bringing out of the edges. Deal with the faces in two or three shades, and small eyes are better merely suggested with a dark dot. Glue the figures onto the model only after the painting of the hull is finished.

Who the set is for

  • builders of models of German submarines in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who want to give a model scale and a story
  • anyone interested in naval dioramas and harbor scenes
  • collectors who combine several crew sets

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted, cast in resin. Glue, paints and a model of a submarine are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Check the number of figures on the packaging of the set.

The figures are not tied to one kit, and they are placed freely on the bridge and the deck. With conning towers of a broken shape, try the position dry before gluing.

Work with contrast, not with detail: a basic tone, a dark wash into the folds and a light bringing out of the edges. Two or three shades are enough for a face.

Yes, the manufacturer also makes a second crew set of the same range, with which the crew can be extended by further figures.
