A detail set for a model of the German King Tiger heavy tank with the Porsche type turret in the initial production form. It replaces the plastic exhaust pipes of squared section and the covers of the cooling openings of the engine compartment with more accurate parts. The set combines castings with photo-etched sheet and is not a kit of the tank — it serves as an accessory for a base model in 1:35 scale.
The King Tiger was a German heavy tank from the late phase of the Second World War. The first vehicles built carried a turret with a curved front, for which the designation Porsche took hold; the later production machines were given a turret with a flat front plate. The initial production batch also differed in details of the engine compartment, in the shape and the covering of the exhaust pipes and in the form of the grilles above the radiators. These assemblies tend to be simplified in plastic kits, because fine mesh and thin-walled tubes do not transfer well into an injection mold.
Wash the castings in warm water with detergent first, so that the mold release agent is removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw, not with pliers, and sand them wet with your airways protected. They are glued with cyanoacrylate; cement for plastic does not work on these materials. Bend the photo-etched grilles in a bender and degrease and spray the whole surface with a base coat before painting. Exhausts look rewarding with layered rust: a dark base, pigments in rust and ocher shades and fine emphasis of the edges.
The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
