An injection-molded plastic kit of the German chassis (Fahrgestell) of the Pz.Kpfw.IV tank in the Ausf.D/E version in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Trumpeter. Note: it is not a complete tank with a turret but the chassis alone, without the turret and the fighting superstructure, converted into an ammunition carrier. The package contains richly detailed plastic, several photo-etched frets, metal shells and thread cable for the crane.
Fahrgestell means chassis in German. On obsolete Pz.Kpfw.IV tanks of the Ausf.D and E versions the turret and the turret ring were removed and the load-bearing chassis was turned into an ammunition carrier. The robust running gear of the Panzer IV suited carrying heavy 600 mm rounds for the giant Karl-Gerät mortars between the supply point and the firing position. The vehicle thus served as an ammunition tractor for heavy siege artillery.
On a chassis, finish and paint the running gear and the open hull before the other parts fill it up. Use liquid cement for plastic and bond the photo-etched parts with super glue. Give attention to the tracks and to the crane assembly with its thread cable. Apply a primer before painting and spray with an airbrush. Weathering brings the German scheme nicely to life: dark washes will bring out the rivets and the panel joints, and dust and mud pigments on the running gear and the lower tub will give the vehicle authenticity.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
