The decal set deals with a situation that has always drawn modelers: an American tank with German markings. According to the name it covers captured machines in the M4, M4A1 and M4A3(W) versions, that is welded as well as cast hulls. From an ordinary Sherman kit you therefore get a vehicle that fits neither among the Allied nor among the German hardware in a cabinet, and that is exactly why it catches the eye. The model is not included in the package.
Captured hardware was a common part of the inventory during the Second World War. A tank taken intact was repaired, supplied with ammunition and sent into action again, this time against its original owner. With Shermans this concerned mainly the fighting in Italy and on the Western Front, where damaged or abandoned machines fell into German hands. The crucial problem with such a vehicle was recognition: its own anti-tank defense and the Luftwaffe knew the silhouette of the Sherman, and so conspicuously large crosses and other signs were painted on the hull and the turret to prevent a hit from friendly fire. The M4A3 designation with the letter W denotes the version with ammunition stowed in a water jacket, brought in because of the risk of fire.
Captured machines usually kept their original olive finish and the new signs were painted over it, sometimes on roughly repainted patches. Repeat this on the model too: first suggest the uneven repainted areas and only then place the markings on them. The crosses tended to be large and will fit even on the cast hull of the M4A1, where a decal softener comes in handy. Bring out the edges of the designs with light scuffing as well, so that they look hand painted.
