A resin set of three figures in 1:35 from the PANZER ART brand. The subject is a crew resting or working in summer dress — with no outer clothing, in shirts only. Compared with the same crew in overalls it is a completely different painting job, and that is exactly the main reason to buy the set.
A shirt is thin fabric. It does not hold its shape like an overall, it lies against the body and forms fine, shallow folds concentrated around the elbows, at the waist and on the back. Keep the contrast lower, therefore, than on thick clothing: too hard a shadow turns a shirt into a tarpaulin. The second thing is the share of bare skin. With rolled-up or short sleeves the forearms and the neck show, so painting the skin stops being a detail and becomes the main surface. Build the skin in at least three tones, blend the transitions and keep it more subdued overall than seems right — in 1:35 color gains in saturation optically. At a hand against a shirt it pays to suggest the boundary with a thin dark glaze, or the arm will merge with the fabric. In a scene the set works well as a moment of rest: figures beside the hull, on a fender, during maintenance.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a disc, sand wet and with breathing protection, glue with cyanoacrylate glue and fill the gaps. For light fabric use a light gray or white primer, as a dark base would pull the shade down. Paint a shirt from a mid layer, lighten the edges of the folds only slightly and lead the shadow with a thin glaze. At the end a matte clear coat, because a glossy surface on thin fabric reads worst of all.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
