An injection-molded plastic model of the American GMC DUKW-353 amphibious truck in 1:35 scale, completed by the WTCT-6 trailer. The combination of vehicle and trailer in one package gives a modeler a natural scene with no further purchases, and it suits both a base of its own and a larger diorama of a landing operation.
The DUKW, called the Duck for the way its designation sounds, came about by converting the proven all-wheel-drive GMC truck into an amphibious vehicle. It received a watertight hull body, a propeller with a rudder and a pump for clearing water that got in. The key innovation was a system for inflating the tires from the driver's seat, which let the vehicle drive off a hard road straight onto a soft beach. It was that very capability that made the DUKW an irreplaceable link in supply during landings, from the Mediterranean through Normandy to the island operations in the Pacific. The vehicle had neither armor nor armament; its value lay purely in bringing cargo from ship to shore without transshipment.
Finish and paint the chassis and the drivetrain before you seat the hull body on them, because afterward you will not reach them. Think out the cargo area in advance: either fill it with a load or leave it empty, but then the interior has to be finished carefully. Bring the olive green to life with shading of the individual surfaces and of the canvas. A model of this type calls for weathering, because the Duck worked in water, in sand and in mud: dried deposits on the wheels and in the wheel arches, a water line and salt bloom on the side of the body will make it the teller of a story. The trailer deserves the same attention as the tractor, or the scene will not sit right.
