Graphite moderator blocks from an RBMK type reactor in 1:35 scale from the maker Offset Scale Models. A diorama accessory, not a model.
Responsibility details are not available.
This item is neither a kit nor a model of equipment — it is a set of diorama accessories from the maker Offset Scale Models which represents the graphite moderator blocks used in RBMK type reactors. It serves as a scenic element for dioramas set in a wrecked nuclear power plant and in cleanup work, where these blocks belong among the most characteristic objects scattered around.
RBMK is a Soviet type of power reactor in which the function of the moderator, that is of the neutron slower, is filled by graphite arranged into blocks around the fuel channels. To the eye graphite has a characteristic dark, dully shining surface with sharp edges and a regular shape — and it is precisely that combination of regular geometry in a disordered environment that makes these blocks a very strong detail on a diorama. The number of pieces in the package and their dimensions are stated on the box.
First wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap and remove any casting residue. Spray the base with a dark primer. Graphite is best imitated with a very dark gray-black base, followed by a fine dry brush with a metallic or graphite paint only along the edges — the surface should stay matte and deep. The placement in a scene comes off best when the blocks are not lined up but scattered at random and partly sunk in the terrain and the dust. Make the dusty effects with pigments applied dry.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and terrain materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
