A diorama ground in 1:35 scale aimed at the entrance area of a dwelling house. A door is one of those motifs that tell a story by themselves: people come to it, people wait at it, somebody comes out of it. That is exactly why a very effective small scene can be built from one even without extensive terrain around it.
Against a large diorama, a compact vignette has a practical advantage: it needs little room on a shelf, it is easier to transport and the viewer reads it at first glance. Place one, at most two figures and leave emptiness around them; the effect is strengthened by it rather than weakened. Try a variant dry with a partly open view into the shadow behind the threshold, which adds depth to the scene.
The door leaf takes more work than all the rest: a base in a darker tone, thin vertical strokes over it for the drawing of the wood, and finally color flowed into the joints between the boards. Darken the ironwork and bring out only a hint of the places people touch, the handle and the area around the lock. Keep the wall in a calmer shade instead, or the two surfaces will compete.
The customer completes the composition with figures and paints of their own; the scenic ground is supplied on its own and unpainted.
