A full millimeter, the stronger half of the Allen line. The most common use is as a replacement for the coarsely molded imitations of joints that a kit carries right on the surface of a part. Removing the original bump is half the work.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection mold can suggest a joint only coarsely: the bump tends to be rounded, often shifted, and once the mold has been polished it disappears altogether. Replacing it with a sharp part is the fastest way to raise the level of a whole build, and the millimeter size is among those where the difference between the original state and the result is best seen even without a magnifier.
The original shape is cut off flat with a sharp knife and the surface is leveled with a fine-grained file. Only then comes the center punch, which keeps the bit from slipping, and the drilling itself. Anyone who skimps on this step gets a head sitting on the remains of the old bump, so it will be higher than the neighboring joints and the whole work will come to nothing. It pays to go over the sanded place with a damp cloth, so that no dust is left in the mark of the file.
A real joint stands out of a surface only a little, and the same rule holds in a scaled-down model. A deeper hole makes it possible to sink the head so that only the head itself stands above the surface, not the shank beneath it. A uniform height across the whole part, moreover, looks better than absolute accuracy of an individual joint, so once they are fitted, look the surface over from the side and seat any protruding pieces by pressing them while the glue is still setting.
On the underside of the engine block and inside the fairing the work does not pay, because nobody can see in there and the risk of damaging the surroundings outweighs the gain. The sensible thing is to pick the surfaces that will be visible from the usual angle once the build is done and to leave the rest as it came out of the mold.
