The HUMVEE, officially the HMMWV or High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, is an American 4x4 cross-country vehicle introduced in the mid-1980s as a universal replacement for older light cars. Its wide track, low center of gravity and independent suspension gave it good stability off road, and its flat body allowed a whole range of superstructures, from an ambulance through a signals version to an anti-tank missile carrier. Special operations units used lightened versions with an open structure, more weapon mounts and extensive racks for fuel, water and ammunition, because they operated far from support. It is precisely these versions that differ markedly from the ordinary army vehicle, and they tend to be covered with gear on every free surface.
A conversion changes the whole character of the vehicle, so unify the coloring of the whole thing while you are still planning. The lightened open structure shows more detail, so it pays to grade the wear and not leave every surface equally clean. A wash will bring out the shadows in the structure and the recesses, and a fine lightening of the edges pulls out the shape. Apply the dust pigments from the bottom and ease off as you go up. Make the textile and canvas parts different in shade from the metal, so that the two do not merge into a single mass.
