A cast set of road wheels for the Leopard 1 tank with damage to the rubber tires modeled in. 1:35 scale, a replacement for the parts from the box for the whole chassis.
Responsibility details are not available.
A model gives itself away faster by a wheel nobody has driven on than by anything else. On heavy equipment the rubber tire of a road wheel is rubbed against the edges of the track links, stony ground tears pieces out of it and heat from the brakes cracks it. The set offers this life ready-made: the tires have crumbled edges, in places a whole segment is missing and the metal core beneath shows. A modeler has nothing to carve or remelt.
The Leopard 1 arose in Germany as an answer to the question whether there was any point in building a tank that could take a hit from a modern gun. The answer was no, and so movement and firepower were given precedence over thickness of armor. It entered Bundeswehr service in 1965 with the British 105 mm gun with a rifled bore and with a multi-fuel ten-cylinder engine. It weighed around forty tons, carried seven road wheels a side on torsion bars and in the end served in roughly a dozen armies from Scandinavia to South America.
The castings are separated from the casting block and the contact faces leveled. When seating them, place the most damaged pieces at random rather than symmetrically; real wear is never spread evenly. The exposed metal is worth overspraying in a dark steel color and adding traces of rust, while the rest of the tire stays deeply matte.
It is worth mentioning that a worn tire was not merely a cosmetic flaw. It set the whole suspension shaking, raised the noise and over a longer run could damage even the guide teeth of the track links. Units therefore changed wheels as they went, and on one machine pieces brand new and all but worn out commonly met.
