The subject is the M109 in its early form, that is with the short 155 mm barrel 23 calibers long, which is easy to tell apart from the later versions with a markedly longer barrel. The M109 is an American tracked self-propelled howitzer that entered service in the 1960s and, in progressively modernized versions, still serves with a number of armies today. The vehicle has a welded aluminum hull, the engine at the front and at the rear a large rotating turret with the howitzer, the crew and the ammunition. The original version carried a 155 mm howitzer with a short barrel, which later upgrades replaced with a longer weapon of greater range. Another characteristic feature is the folding spade at the rear, which braces the vehicle against the ground when firing.
Finish the running gear and everything inside the hull that disappears from sight once it is closed up first. Paint the wheels and the tracks separately. Seat the barrel and its mount carefully so that the weapon does not sit crooked; on a finished model that shows immediately. The rear spade can be set in the lowered position if you plan the model for a firing position. After the base color unify the surface with a filter, and a wash will pick out the rivets, the hatches and the grilles. Build up dust and mud with pigments from the bottom upwards, and suggest restrained wear on the metal edges and the step plates.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
