A replacement barrel solves two typical weaknesses of the plastic part: the parting line, which has to be laboriously sanded away on a round surface, and the muzzle, whose bore tends to be only suggested or goes off the axis after drilling.
Watch out for the version of the gun
The M1A1 designation is a distinguishing detail. This version has a plain muzzle without a muzzle brake, whereas later configurations of the gun had the muzzle threaded and fitted with a muzzle brake. Choose according to the particular machine you are building.
The M18 Hellcat was an American tank destroyer of the Second World War period, built on a light chassis with torsion bar suspension and with the emphasis on speed. It had an open turret with a 76 mm gun and fairly weak armor, as the concept bet on mobility and the ability to change firing position quickly, not on resilience. The open top of the turret means that the interior is visible on a model, so the quality of the other details tells markedly on it as well.
Cut the plastic barrel off with a saw at a right angle to the axis and level the cut surface, so that the turned part seats without play and the axis of the gun stays straight. Degrease the part before gluing and sand the surface finely, otherwise the base color will not hold on the smooth material. It is bonded with super glue, and with a looser fit a two-part epoxy is safer, because it gives time for alignment. Leave the muzzle clean while painting and wipe any overflow out with a cotton swab before it dries. Once painted, dust the barrel only lightly with pigment, as a sharp transition of shade between the barrel and the turret will give the replacement part away.
