An add-on set for a plastic kit of the American M551 Sheridan armored vehicle in 1:35 scale. It is not a model of the vehicle — the contents are a turned metal barrel in the early fit, with which the plastic part from the base kit is replaced.
The M551 Sheridan was a light American armored vehicle designed to be air-transportable and amphibious, with a very light hull. It carried an unusual weapon: the short M81 barrel of large caliber, from which both conventional ammunition and an anti-tank guided missile could be launched. The proportion of a short thick barrel and a low hull gives the vehicle a characteristic silhouette, in which the barrel is the main recognition mark.
On short barrels of large diameter every inaccuracy is clearly visible: the parting gap runs right around the circumference, the muzzle in plastic tends to be only shallowly suggested and the cross section is not circular once sanded. A turned metal piece has the right cylindrical shape, a deep muzzle and clean edges. The swap is a matter of a few minutes and is among the simplest ways of moving a model markedly forward.
Try dry how the part sits in the mantlet and widen the hole carefully if need be. Degrease the metal with spirit, glue with cyanoacrylate in drops and watch that the barrel points exactly along the axis. Before painting, lay on a base meant for metal; it pays to darken the muzzle only at the end, so that it stays optically deep. The set is intended for the Tamiya 35365 kit.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which is not part of the package. Glue, paints and other materials are not enclosed.
