A set of oak leaves etched from thin metal sheet, intended for creating vegetation in a scene in 1:35 scale. It is not a part for a model but material for a diorama and a vignette. The oak is one of the most typical trees of European scenery and its characteristically lobed leaf is recognized at first glance in scale, which makes it a rewarding element both at the foot of a tree and in the crown.
The main advantage of photo-etch is that it holds the shape you give it. Every leaf can be bent, turned and slightly twisted, and it stays that way; it does not curl under the influence of moisture and it does not flatten back out like leaves made of paper. The crown therefore looks airy and still keeps its shape after years in a display case. Metal also stands up to fine sanding and to repeated retouching of the paint.
Snip the leaves off the fret with sharp nippers or a scalpel on a hard surface and sand the burr away. Form the shape by pressing them into a soft surface, for example into rubber or a cork mat. The metal is smooth, so start with a primer intended for metal, because otherwise the finish will flake off in time. Then apply acrylic paints in several shades of green, go over the edges at the end with a lighter tone dry and tie it all together with a thin glaze. Glue the finished leaves with cyanoacrylate glue onto a tree armature of twisted wire or onto natural twigs, and scatter the leaves for the ground into a layer of binder.
The package contains photo-etched leaves. Paints, glue and a tree armature are not part of it.
