Until the summer of 1941 the day fighters over England wore an earthy pair of shades devised for the defense of the island above fields and hedgerows. But the focus of the fighting moved across the Channel: the squadrons flew over water and over the coastal strip, where a brown patch gives itself away at first glance. A cool gray tone replaced it and the underside was lightened to a gray-blue.
The Mk IX came about as a quick answer to German superiority at altitude and entered service just at the time when the new scheme was already in force. It therefore carries it almost always, and there lies a practical trap for a modeler who copies the finish of an older version. The shape of the fields stayed similar, but the color content is different, and that shows more than any detail of armament.
The glazing of the Mk IX has a low framed canopy with a drop-down door, around which a brush works wretchedly. The stencils are die-cut for the outer and the inner face, so the frame comes out precisely from both viewpoints. Two insignia stencils allow the roundel to be sprayed and the decals cover the remaining markings.
The cool shade of the upper surfaces is sensitive to the thickness of the coat: sprayed heavily it goes flatly gray and the transitions in the pattern disappear. It is better to thin it more and build the tone up gradually.
