Filmgoers know the OT-810 better than they suspect. When a German half-track carrier appeared in the war films of the 1960s and 1970s, it was almost always the Koprivnice vehicle stripped of its roof and fitted with a machine gun, because genuine examples of German manufacture were by then almost unobtainable in Europe. The army itself took a sober view of it: after wheeled armored vehicles were introduced it stayed mainly with the engineers, and in a later modification it carried a recoilless gun against armored equipment on its body.
On this type the chassis with its interleaved wheels is the most complicated part of the model and at the same time the one the viewer has closest to his eyes. Injected parts tend, because of the parting line of the mold, to be rounded where there should be an edge, and the rim comes out somewhat thicker than corresponds to reality. The replacement evens out this disproportion and gives the wheel back its correct outline.
The castings are designed for the arms of the kit from Tamiya, so they keep the original spacing and the height of the axis above the terrain. Fitting them requires neither drilling nor the insertion of pins. After the seating surfaces have been cleaned it is advisable to fit the wheels dry first and check that the overlapping rows touch as they should, and only then to reach for the glue. Anyone who wants to go further can flatten the lower part of the rim and thereby suggest the loading of the machine by its own weight.
Vehicles of the Czechoslovak army carried a uniform olive finish without patches, so all the expression of the chassis has to come from dust and from the reflections on the exposed metal faces. On the wheels it shows the most: the center stays matte, the circumference darkens and the lower third of the rim gets the most deposit. Anyone fond of a story in a display case can leave one disk with a freshly scuffed rim, as though a mechanic had recently changed it.
