About product

The beaver-tail tile in 1:35 scale

The beaver-tail tile is a fired roof tile with an arched lower edge, typical of central European buildings. In a scene it is the roof that makes most of the impression: the regular rhythm of the tiles sets the period and the place at once, and a damaged roof is among the strongest elements of a diorama composition. It is a building element of a scene, not a model of machinery.

The same subject in three scales

The element is also made in 1:48 and 1:72 scale. The scale is the distinguishing detail — choose it according to the buildings and figures in your scene. The manufacturer also makes a further variant of the beaver-tail tile in the same line, so a roof can be put together from several types of part.

What it is suited to

You will use the tiling on models of houses, barns and farm buildings, on ruins with exposed trusses and on small shelters. It also suits the repair and completion of roofs from other sources, where a piece of area or an edge is missing.

Installation and painting tips

Clean the parts up and level the surfaces beneath them — an uneven ground shows on a roof at once. Start laying from the bottom and work upward with an overlap, so that the rows look natural; now and then turn or shift one tile, because a perfectly aligned roof looks artificial. Choose the glue according to the material — cyanoacrylate for small resin parts, thin cement for plastic on plastic. In color, rely on several shades of brick and brown applied irregularly tile by tile, then tie it together with a dark wash into the joints and finally add a green-gray tinge of moss and dust in the shaded places.

Who the element is for

  • builders of dioramas with buildings and ruins in 1:35 scale
  • modelers who put a roof together tile by tile
  • anyone interested in central European buildings
  • patient modelers, because laying tiling is slow work

The element is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A fired roof tile with an arched lower edge, typical of central European buildings. Hence the English designation in the name.

Check the number of pieces and the covered area on the packaging. For larger roofs count on more than one package.

This variant is the outer beaver-tail tile, that is tiling for the visible area of a roof. The other variant is made without that qualification.

Work from the bottom up with an overlap and deliberately turn or shift a few tiles slightly. Irregularity is what makes a roof believable.
