A collector plastic model of the dinosaur Parasaurolophus in 1:35 scale from Tamiya, supplied as a diorama set. According to the manufacturer the box contains two head variants for depicting a male and a female, several flying pterosaurs, a diorama base and a human figure in the same scale for a size comparison. It is not a piece of equipment but a model of a prehistoric animal — so treat both the build and the painting as work with a living creature and a scene.
Parasaurolophus was a herbivorous dinosaur of the hadrosaur (duck-billed) group that lived in the Late Cretaceous in what is now North America. It became famous for the striking hollow crest running back from its head — a long tube that is thought to have served for making sounds and for communication within the herd. It was a placid plant-eater that moved on two legs as well as on four, and today it is among the most easily recognized dinosaurs of all.
Glue the parts with cement for plastic and sand the seams on the body carefully so that they do not interrupt the smooth run of the skin. Apply a primer before painting. Paint the skin with an airbrush from a darker base to a lighter belly, soften the transitions and bring out the scale texture with a dark wash in the recesses and drybrushing over the raised areas. The colors of dinosaurs are not known exactly — you have creative freedom, and earthy as well as bolder patterns are popular. Finish the base as a prehistoric scene with vegetation.
