The motif of this base is an entrance, that is, an opening that once led inside a building. A doorway has a particular power in a setting: the viewer automatically imagines what is behind it, and the scene therefore continues even into places that cannot be seen.
A figure placed in the opening reads quite differently from a figure in front of it. In the first case it is leaving or arriving, in the second it is guarding the threshold. Turning it by a few degrees is enough to shift the meaning of the whole setting. It is therefore worth trying the placing dry for as long as the model is not glued down for good.
The depth of the opening comes out when you shade it toward the inside with a darker shade and conversely lighten the edges of the reveal. Pure black reads like a hole cut into paper, so reach rather for a very dark brown with a hint of blue. Work dust and fine grit into the threshold so that the transition to the floor does not end in a sharp edge. A light edge around the rim of the opening also hints at where the daylight falls into the space, and that ties the whole setting together.
The base is meant to be finished to suit your own subject; the filling of the opening, the rubble and the small things around the threshold are yours to complete the scene with.
