Windows divided by lead profiles give a building on a diorama an old-world character straight away. The small fields repeat in a regular grid, and that regularity is just what is hardest in work by hand, because a single field out of line is visible at first sight. The printed subject in 1:35 scale offers the grid finished and ready to be fitted into a window opening.

Trim the element with a sharp blade along a rule and check the edge against the light, so that no frayed edge is left anywhere. Glue it onto the window opening from behind and apply the glue only around the perimeter, sparingly; the suitable type is set out in the manufacturer's instructions. On structures that stand further from the viewer it helps to darken the window slightly, so that it does not come across as empty behind the wall. Try every shade and varnish on an offcut first; a printed surface takes solvents worse than plastic.

It comes into its own in the foreground and in the back plane of a scene, and working with it calls for no special tools beyond a sharp blade and a rule.
