This kit from the Polish brand IBG models covers the German light tank Pz.Kpfw. II in the development form Ausf. b. It fits into a complete range of early versions that the manufacturer is gradually releasing in this scale, so it can be built as part of a series. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Pz.Kpfw. II was a light tank armed with a 20 mm automatic cannon and a coaxial machine gun. Before series production got under way, the type went through several short development batches designated by lower-case letters: a1, a2, a3 and then b. Batch b brought changes to the powerplant, the transmission and the running gear and forms an intermediate stage between the first trial machines and the later production versions. Ausf. b with a lower-case letter is not the same thing as Ausf. B with a capital – they are two different variants, which differ in details of the hull and the running gear, and that is easily overlooked when choosing a kit or accessories.
On light tanks the running gear is the key thing: assemble it, clean it up and check that it is true to axis before any paint goes on the model. It pays to keep the wheels and the tracks separate, paint them to one side and fit them only at the end. Gloss varnish comes before the decals and matte after them. Early German armored vehicles are usually built in a uniform dark gray finish, but always check the particular schemes and markings in the instructions that come with the kit. Keep the weathering restrained: a fine wash into the engraved gaps, discreet chipping on the edges and light dusting of the fenders and the running gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
