This item is neither a model of a vehicle nor of an aircraft, but a building for a diorama. It shows an arched road bridge of the kind built all over Central Europe across brooks and shallow rivers and which in most cases outlasted both world wars. The 1:35 scale matches ordinary military kits, so the bridge stands up beside a tank, a half-track and a truck alike.
A bridge belongs among the most rewarding elements of composition. It divides the area into two levels, lets a bank and a water surface come about and offers the viewer an understandable reason why a column has stopped or why infantry is taking cover under the arch. The railing and the face of the arch are moreover surfaces on which patina comes into its own: moss at the foot of the pier, worn tracks on the roadway, an edge broken off by a hit.
Work from the coarse to the fine. First unify the shade of the brickwork with one base layer, then draw the joints out with a dark wash shade and at the end lift the edges of the individual stones by drybrushing. Add the water surface only after the bridge is firmly seated on the base, so that the edge of the arch is not left hanging above the material. Small unevenness at the contact with the terrain will be masked by a mixture of sand and crushed leaves.
