A ruin offers what an intact building does not: a view inside, irregular edges and surfaces a composition can lean on. A figure placed in an opening or behind the edge of a wall creates tension at once, without your adding anything further.
Leave the interior surfaces darker than the exterior; the difference between the outside and the shadow within makes up a large part of the impression. Paint the masonry exposed under the plaster separately and bring the joints out with a wash. Then even the lower areas of the structure out in a dust shade, so that they read as one whole and not as a set of separate parts.
With structures that have openings, the angle matters a great deal. Set the ground in the place where it will finally stand and check whether the interior can be seen into. If not, turning the ruin a few degrees helps. Light falling from above draws the edges out and speaks to the result more than another layer of paint.
