An injection-molded plastic kit of the T-72A main battle tank in the late production configuration, in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The 1:35 scale is the most widespread for tracked vehicles, so the finished model is easy to complete with figures, accessories and diorama features from the usual range.
The T-72 is among the most numerously produced tanks of the second half of the twentieth century. Against the original configuration, the T-72A version brought a laser rangefinder, a strengthened turret front, rubber side skirts over the running gear and smoke grenade launchers on the sides of the turret. The main armament is a 125 mm smoothbore gun complemented by an autoloader, thanks to which the vehicle has a three-man crew and a low silhouette. Later production series differed above all in the details of the external fittings, so it is exactly the small items on the turret and on the fenders that decide which particular configuration a model represents.
Work from the bottom up: paint the running gear, the wheels and the inner faces of the tracks before the side skirts cover them. Try the tracks dry on the wheels first and only then deal with the sag — on tanks with rubber skirts only part of it is visible, so there is no need to overdo it. Paint the turret and the hull separately, as many details are otherwise hard to reach with a spray. Liven the base green or sand tone up with a filter and a dark wash into the recesses; keep the dry brush restrained, so that the model does not look dusty all over. The most realism is added by the underside: apply pigments and dried mud from the bottom upwards and strengthen them on the fenders. A tow cable made of thin wire replaces the plastic part and is one of the most visible improvements.
