About product

Schwerer Zugkraftwagen 18 t Sd.Kfz. 9, artillery version 1:35 - a Trumpeter kit

This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter represents the Sd.Kfz. 9 in the artillery (prime mover) version — the classic heavy tractor with an open cargo bed, benches for the gun crew and space for ammunition. Do not confuse it: this is not the 18 t with the 8.8 cm Flak, which is an entirely different machine, a self-propelled platform with an armored cab, folding sides and the gun mounted directly on the chassis. This kit is a tractor, not a self-propelled gun. The kit comes from new tooling, has over 570 parts on 13 sprues, individual track links, photo-etched parts, rubber tires and a decal sheet. The finished model measures roughly 240.5 mm long and 78.7 mm wide, a genuine giant.

The real subject

The Sd.Kfz. 9, known after its maker as the Famo, was the heaviest German half-track tractor of the Second World War. Its job was what nobody else could manage: towing the heaviest guns, recovering and hauling away damaged tanks and moving heavy loads. Without these tractors the German army could not have looked after its own equipment — a tank recovered and repaired went back into action, a written-off one did not. Behind the cab the artillery version had a cargo bed with benches for the crew of the towed gun and space for ammunition, so it carried the whole gun crew and their ammunition along behind the gun. Crane versions and the self-propelled platform with the 8.8 cm gun were built on the same chassis, but they differ from the tractor at first glance.

Building and painting tips

Expect a large and complex model. The most work goes into the running gear and the assembly of the individual track links — glue the links in batches and let the track dry on the wheels with the correct sag. Paint the cab and the cargo bed before you close them up. An airbrush and a primer coat are the obvious choice here. For weathering, use washes in the rivets and seams, dust and mud pigments on the tracks and the underside, and fine chipping on the edges of the cargo bed where the crew climbed up.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of German Second World War vehicles who also want what towed the tanks
  • Diorama builders: recovering a tank or moving a heavy gun
  • More experienced modelers who want to enjoy individual track links and photo-etch
  • Collectors looking for the tractor, not the self-propelled gun with the 8.8 cm Flak

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Fundamental. This kit is a tractor: an open cargo bed with benches for the gun crew and ammunition, with the gun towed behind it. The version with the 8.8 cm Flak is a self-propelled gun: an armored cab, folding platform sides and the gun mounted directly on the chassis. They are two different models, so do not mix them up.

It is the standard prime mover configuration intended for towing heavy guns. Behind the cab it has a cargo bed with benches for the gun crew and space for ammunition, so it carries the whole crew and their ammunition along behind the towed weapon.

The kit contains tracks made of individual links. The tires on the front wheels are rubber, and photo-etched parts complete the box.

Rather not. The large number of parts, the individual track links and the photo-etch call for patience and a steady hand; it is a model for more experienced modelers.
