This plastic kit from the Italian brand Italeri represents the Panther medium tank in the Ausf. A version, carried under the military designation Sd.Kfz. 171, in 1:35, the most widespread scale for military subjects. Together with the Tiger and the Sherman the Panther is one of the most frequently built subjects of all, so a wide range of accessories, tracks and decals exists for it.
The Panther was a German medium tank introduced in 1943. Its characteristic features are steeply sloped frontal armor, interleaved road wheels on torsion bars and a long 75 mm gun with a high muzzle velocity, which for its caliber was exceptionally effective at long range. The Ausf. A version followed the first production version, the Ausf. D, and brought above all a new commander's cupola and a different solution for the machine-gun port in the frontal armor of the hull. Power came from a twelve-cylinder gasoline engine; the running gear was technically demanding and sensitive to maintenance, which is a frequently mentioned feature of this design.
The interleaved road wheels are the most laborious part of the build on a Panther — it pays to assemble and paint them before the outer rows and the tracks are fitted. Pull the tracks on dry and check the sag between the guide wheels. Before you close the hull, think about what will be visible inside it. Build the painting in layers: primer, the dark yellow base shade, any camouflage pattern sprayed with thinned paint or with the help of modeling putty, then a dark wash in the engraved lines and finally pigments from the bottom up. Mark the chipped edges with a dark paint and a fine brush, not with silver — it looks more believable. Apply the decals over a gloss base and go over them with a decal softener.
