About product

Sd.Kfz. 222 1:35 (Tamiya)

An injection-molded plastic model of the German light reconnaissance armored car Sd.Kfz. 222 (leichter Panzerspahwagen) in 1:35 scale from Tamiya. The model faithfully captures the characteristic welded hull with sloped armor and the open rotating turret with its armament. The parts are finely shaped with well-worked detail of the armor, the chassis and the weapons; a figure is usually included.

The real subject

The Sd.Kfz. 222 was a four-wheeled (4x4) light armored car used above all for reconnaissance. Thanks to all-wheel drive and low weight it had excellent mobility off road. In its open rotating turret it carried a 2 cm autocannon and a coaxial 7.92 mm machine gun, and the turret was protected against grenades and splinters by a folding wire mesh screen. The crew was three men. The vehicle served on a number of fronts from the beginning of the Second World War.

Building and painting tips

Before closing the hull, finish and paint the interior and the running gear, which are harder to reach later. Glue the plastic parts with liquid modeling cement for plastic, then fill and sand the joints. Apply a base coat of primer before painting and lay the paints on with an airbrush in thin coats. For a realistic look, use washes and pigments (dust and mud effects) and bring out the rivets and the edges of the armor.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of German Second World War reconnaissance equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers interested in armored cars (4x4)
  • Diorama builders and lovers of weathering

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was a light armored car with 4x4 drive intended mainly for reconnaissance; thanks to its low weight and all-wheel drive it was very mobile off road.

In its open rotating turret it carried a 2 cm autocannon and a coaxial 7.92 mm machine gun; the turret was protected against grenades by a folding wire mesh screen.

It is a well-molded kit; with basic experience it can be managed, but the smaller parts and the weathering will reward a careful approach.
