The Sd.Kfz.251 was a German half-track armored personnel carrier of the Second World War. At the front it had a steered axle with wheels and at the rear a tracked running gear with interleaved road wheels, so it combined the handling of a truck with the cross-country ability of a tracked vehicle. It was produced in several forms and in dozens of purpose-built variants, from infantry transport through engineer versions to weapon carriers. The running gear is the part most visible on a model and the part that matters most.
The set brings early pattern tracks and a drive sprocket in 1:35 scale. The designation polygonal distinguishes this shape variant from the other form the range offers alongside it, so check against a photograph of your own machine which of them matches the subject. Replacement running gear parts deal with the place where the plastic parts from the kit tend to be simplified and where they are most conspicuous when viewed from the side.
On a half-track vehicle the track wraps around the rear part of the running gear only; the front axle stays on wheels. Before fixing it, check that the track sits on all the wheels and that its tension matches a photograph of the subject. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts; cement for plastic models does not hold on resin and metal, so use cyanoacrylate. Cut excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the area down. Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water before painting and let them dry. The running gear is easier to paint before it is fitted to the model.
