A set of decals from the South Korean maker DEF Model that transfers a Zimmerit texture onto the model in 1:35 scale. It is not a model of the vehicle, nor a photo-etched set: it is a thin decal with a three-dimensionally shaped surface whose pattern matches the late production version of the Sturmpanzer IV assault gun, known by the nickname Brummbär. The package holds a decal sheet and instructions for applying it.
Zimmerit was a paste that German production applied to the vertical surfaces of combat vehicles roughly in 1943 and 1944. Its purpose was to make it impossible for magnetic anti-tank mines to attach: the non-magnetic layer it created, with its pronounced texture, did not let the magnet seat on the armor. The pattern of the texture differed according to the factory and the type of vehicle, which makes it one of the most striking recognition features of the vehicles of the period. For modelers Zimmerit was long a source of trouble, because applying putty by hand and pressing the pattern into it is slow and hard to put right when it goes wrong.
Work on finished surfaces of the model that are perfectly smooth and degreased; any unevenness will show through the thin decal. It is recommended to spray the surface with gloss varnish first, so that the decal does not lose adhesion and leave silvered edges. Cut the sheet up surface by surface according to the instructions, not all at once. Soak the decal, move it carefully into place and settle it with a soft brush; around welds, hatches and fittings use a softener and press the decal into shape with a cotton swab. Let it dry thoroughly. Once dry, the surface is painted over just like the rest of the model, and the texture comes out once a wash and dust pigments run into the grooves.
The set is an addition to a model, not a kit of the vehicle. The base model, paints and decal softener are not included in the package.
