A PANZER ART accessory in 1:35 scale: the loader's hatch from the turret roof of the heavy tank, and that in the stamped form. The same hatch was also produced welded, so before building it pays to know which particular machine you want to build.
The stamped hatch is the younger of the two renditions. It came about by pressing from a single piece of sheet, which was a saving of time as well as of labor in wartime production, because welding and cleaning up the joints fell away. On a finished tank you recognize it by the smooth, slightly convex surface without apparent seams. It covered the loader's place in the right part of the turret roof: this is where the crew got in, where ammunition was passed and during long moves the fighting compartment was aired through it. The turret roof was walked on at the same time, so the hatch belonged among the places where the paint wore through first.
The difference between the two types of hatch is small, but connoisseurs will see it on finished work immediately, so keep to photographs of your own machine. When cleaning the part up, let the fine arch of the pressing stand out on the surface; if you sand it away, you lose exactly what distinguishes the hatch. Scuffed metal around the edge and a thin layer of dust in the hinges turn a small part into a place where the eye looks of its own accord on a model.
