This set shows a residential town house of the kind that made up the ordinary buildings of European cities and small towns. It is not a model of equipment but an architectural set piece for a diorama. In 1:35 scale the house is exactly the element that tells the viewer at once how large the vehicle standing beside it is.
Town fighting belongs among the most rewarding themes, and a facade with windows and doors offers dozens of small stories: a half-open window, plaster shot through, sandbags on the ground floor, a bicycle leaning against the wall. The house at the same time solves a practical problem – it closes a scene from one side, so the diorama does not come across as a cut-out piece of landscape without boundaries.
Never leave the facade in a single shade. Break the base tone up with stippled filters, around the plinth suggest splashed mud and under the sills let lighter traces of washed-off dust run down. Draw the exposed bricks and the joints out separately. Darken the inside of the windows, otherwise they will come across as painted glass, and consider plain hints of curtains or a damaged frame. Cover the transition of the wall into the terrain with rubble and small debris, otherwise the gap between the building and the base will be visible from every angle.
