Pre-cut self-adhesive painting masks in 1:35 scale from Art Scale. This is neither a kit nor spare parts but an aid for painting: the masks go onto the clear parts, cover the transparent areas and leave only the frames of the cabin, the doors and the roof windows exposed. The double-sided version allows for masking from the outside and from the inside of the glazing. On a helicopter that makes more sense than on a fighter: you can see right through the cabin and the inner side of the frames is clearly visible on a finished model. The set is cut to the shape of the parts of the Academy kit, so with another kit you should test the fit first.
The Bell UH-1C is the armed version of the UH-1 helicopter, known by the nickname Huey. Compared with the transport version it received a more powerful engine and a revised main rotor with wider blades, so that it could carry the weight of the armament and handle sharper maneuvers. The fuselage has a glazed nose with large front windows, side doors with glazing and roof windows, so the glazed area makes up a large part of the front of the machine. Masking is therefore one of the most time-consuming parts of building this subject.
Wash the clear parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry. Lift the masks out of the sheet with the point of a scalpel and handle them with tweezers so that no fingerprints are left on the adhesive layer. Apply the inner masks before you fit the glazing into the fuselage; afterward you can no longer reach them. Press each mask down from the center toward the edges and smooth the edge with a toothpick. Trim any piece that does not fit with a fresh blade right on the part. Spray thin coats perpendicular to the surface, first the interior shade, then the exterior base. Lift the masks once the paint has set, pulling them back over themselves at an angle.
The masks are an aid for painting, not a kit or spare parts. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
