A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the American main battle tank in the M1A1 and M1A2 versions. This is not a kit or a part — it is an aid that marks out the rubber tire band against the rim on the wheel, so the two can be sprayed on their own. The set is cut for the Rye Field Model RM-5004 kit.
The Abrams carries seven large road wheels with a pronounced rubber tire band on each side, torsion bar suspension and the drive sprocket at the rear. Something else is fundamental, though: the running gear is largely hidden behind heavy side skirts that cover the upper half of the wheels. Only a lower sliver stays visible — and that is more treacherous for painting than it might seem. The viewer does not see the whole wheel but a narrow strip in which the border between rubber and rim appears briefly and sharply; any inaccuracy there has nowhere to disappear to. The presence of the skirts also means that on a finished model the wheels are examined from below and at a sharp angle, the view in which bled paint stands out most.
On a vehicle where only part of the running gear is visible, all the attention settles on exactly that part. A clean transition gives the model on a shelf the impression that the running gear continues even where it cannot be seen; a blurred transition, by contrast, flattens the whole underside. At a competition, judges look under the skirts of modern tanks deliberately, because they know it is a place that often gets skimped — and the difference between thoughtfully sprayed wheels and a quick pass with a brush is spotted there at once.
