The Sturmgeschütz III came about as an armored means of direct infantry support and was built on the chassis of the Panzer III tank. Instead of a rotating turret it received a low fixed superstructure: that gave it a small silhouette, but the crew had to aim by turning the whole vehicle. The later versions with the long gun barrel were committed more and more often against armored vehicles as well. Inside, the commander, the gunner, the loader and the driver worked in the cramped space of the fighting compartment, and during halts they spent most of their time outside on the hull or around the vehicle, which is more rewarding for a diorama than closed hatches.
Figure accessories of this kind give a static model both scale and a story. They come out best when you link the figure with the vehicle - leaning against the side of the superstructure, at an open hatch or in contact with the equipment on the hull. Before settling it, check that the base and the surface of the model follow on without a visible gap; a small leveling of the joint with modeling filler is quicker than sanding a finished scene later. If you paint the figures yourself, start with the face and the hands and only then deal with the uniform, the equipment and the dusting that ties the figure in with the ground around it.
