A resin wheel set for the British Austin K2 truck of the Second World War period, in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory meant to replace the plastic wheels supplied in the box. The tires carry the Dunlop tread pattern, which is also what sets this version apart from the sister sets with the patterns of other period tire makers.
On a truck model the tire is one of the few rounded shapes where the mold parting line of the plastic part shows at first glance. A resin casting is one piece, so the tread pattern and the lettering on the sidewall stay undamaged. The wheel is cast with a weighted tire effect, that is with a flattened contact patch and a slightly bulging sidewall, as if a loaded vehicle were standing on it. The model then sits on its base convincingly instead of resting on four perfect circles.
The Austin K2 was a British truck whose best-known version became the heavy K2/Y ambulance with a closed box body. Vehicles of this type served with British units on most fronts, from North Africa to Western Europe, and they are among the most frequently built British utility trucks in modeling. Period tires came from several makers, so the choice of tread pattern is a legitimate way to individualize a model.
Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water to remove the mold release agent. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw, trim the rest and level it with a file, sand wet and with respiratory protection. Glue resin with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting, separate the rim and the tread with masking or paint them before assembly. A final touch is dust pigment rubbed into the tread pattern.
The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
