A figure of a French infantryman from the years 1914 to 1918 in 1:35 scale from the Dynamo-Models brand. The stance of the figure matches the name: the soldier is not standing in combat but resting some way behind the line, with relaxed shoulders and his weight shifted onto one leg.
The French infantryman of the Great War was nicknamed the poilu. He wore an Adrian helmet with its longitudinal crest, a long serge greatcoat with the skirts hooked back, puttees above high boots and field equipment with a haversack and a water container. It is exactly this silhouette that sets French infantry apart from British and German at first glance.
The uniform is dominated by the blue-gray shade known as bleu horizon. It looks best when built from a lighter base toward darker shadows in the folds of the greatcoat, not the other way round. The puttees benefit from a soft transition into a dusty edge above the boots. Leave the helmet rather matte and hint at the worn edges with dark metal. Do not paint them as one flat area, though; mark the edge of each wrap with a thin darker line, otherwise a shapeless cylinder results. Take the face toward warmer tones; a tired expression is supported by a light shadow under the eyes.
