The Flak 37 was a German automatic anti-aircraft gun of 37 mm caliber from the period of the Second World War, used both on a wheeled carriage and in fixed positions and on self-propelled mounts. The design is exceptionally rewarding for the modeler, because it is largely made up of an open lattice structure carriage, thin shields, seats and mechanisms that are not hidden anywhere under armor.
It is on artillery subjects that a replacement barrel is the most significant improvement. A plastic barrel always has a mold parting line that has to be sanded, and it never has a perfectly circular section or an open muzzle. The replacement part removes those problems. Before fitting it, check that the diameter sits in the plastic seat and, if need be, open it slightly with a drill. Fit the barrel at the very end of the build, so that it is not bent during handling, and paint it separately. A metal barrel also responds beautifully to burnishing and a fine graphite patina.
Cut the photo-etched parts off with a scalpel, and make the bends on the groove in one stroke. The open structures of the carriage call for patience and for checking the right angles until the glue has set. Degrease the whole thing before painting and cover it with a primer for metal. An anti-aircraft gun position suits a diorama with a crew, but also stands on its own on a base.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which it does not include. The glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
