A basic set of photo-etched brass parts for a plastic model of the Panzer IV tank in the Ausf.H version in 1:35 scale. It is an accessory to a kit under construction, not a model in its own right. The set deals with the places where injection molded plastic runs up against the technological minimum thickness and where the difference from the real vehicle is therefore the most visible. The dimensions and the shapes are based on the Border BT-005 kit.
The Ausf.H is the version on which the sheet metal side skirts hung on a frame above the running gear appeared, along with the sheet metal protection around the turret. On the real vehicle these were thin plates hung on a light structure — exactly the type of part that is a problem in plastic. A moldable plastic skirt works out at several times the real thickness in scale, and its hanging frame tends to be simplified into a solid wall. In brass the skirt has a sharp edge and fully drawn hangers, and above all it can be bent, dented or partly taken off, which is the most rewarding detail on this version of all.
Large thin surfaces are treacherous because they warp. Before you fit a part, lay it on flat glass and run a flat tool with a smoothed edge over it, so that it really is flat. Assemble the hanging frame and the skirt in order from the stiffest part, use that as the skeleton and only then hang the rest on it. Where thin photo-etched metal is too soft on its own, it can be stiffened with a thin layer of cyanoacrylate glue on the reverse or by backing it with a strip of plastic film. Carry out deliberate deformation only at the end, on a finished and dry assembly, otherwise you will break the joints apart.
The set is an accessory, not a kit. The model, glue, primer and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
