A photo-etched add-on set from Voyager Model for models of the American half-track vehicles of the M3 series and their derivatives in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit: these are brass holders, brackets and clamps for stowing equipment, which on the real vehicles hung on the sides and the rear of the hull. The configuration is universal, so the set can be used across models of this family.
The M3 half-track vehicles were among the most widespread American vehicles of the Second World War. They served as armored personnel carriers and as carriers for weapons and equipment; a version with an 81 mm mortar also came from the same basis. Vehicles in the field were routinely loaded with the crew's equipment, jerrycans, boxes, rolled tarpaulins and spare wheels, and it was precisely the holders and clamps on the sides of the hull that gave the silhouette its characteristically cluttered look. On a model these small items make up a substantial part of the difference between a box build and a vehicle that looks used.
The holders themselves are only half the work: it is the load that turns them into a scene. Prepare the boxes, tarpaulins rolled from a handkerchief soaked in thinned glue, or jerrycans from the box in advance and try them dry to see whether they fit into a holder. Glue the holder on only after the hull is painted, so that a continuous finish remains beneath it. Degrease the metal parts and spray them with a base; without it the paint chips off the edges. Weathering is rewarding on metal clamps: a dark wash runs under the straps and into the corners, a fine dry brush brings out the edges, and spots of a dark steel shade where the crew reached and where a box rubbed give the model credibility in scale.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The model of the vehicle, the load, the glue and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
