About product

Carley float for 60 people, type 2 - 3D printed 1:350

This is a 3D-printed resin accessory in 1:350 scale representing a Carley float in the size for sixty people, in the type 2 configuration. It is not a ship kit but a set of details with which the deck and the superstructures of a model are completed. Eduard offers this type of float in several sizes, for ten, twenty-five, forty and sixty people, and always in two configurations, so you can choose the variant that matches your ship. The manufacturer is the Czech company Eduard.

The real subject

The Carley float was a simple life-saving device in the form of a closed ring of buoyant core wrapped in canvas, with a grid floor inside. It did not sink, it floated even upside down and it needed no maintenance, so it became standard equipment on warships. The floats were stowed upright on the sides of superstructures, in racks by the funnel or on deck bulkheads, so on a model they are visible both in profile and from above and are among the features that make a deck look inhabited. The plastic floats from a box tend to be only roughly suggested at this scale and the grid floor does not show on them.

Usage and painting tips

Cut the parts off the print supports with a sharp scalpel, sand the marks away and wash everything in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent. They are bonded with super glue, and on parts this small it pays to apply it with a pin. Apply a primer before painting. The floats were usually painted in the ship's shade, so they can be sprayed together with the superstructures; a fine dark wash will bring out the grid floor and the woven rim, and drybrushing with a light tone will pull out the edges.

Who the accessory is for

  • builders of warship models in 1:350 scale
  • modelers replacing roughly suggested features from a plastic kit
  • those finishing a model with fine photo-etch who want the deck equipment to match
  • modelers used to working with resin and super glue

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a base kit. Glue, paints and the model of the ship are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a deck accessory that is glued to a finished model of a warship. The kit has to be obtained separately.

Eduard offers the floats in two configurations; they differ in their shape. Choose the float according to a photograph of your subject.

Check the number of pieces on the packaging of the product. The figure in the name, sixty people, refers to the capacity of the real float, not to the number of parts.

Super glue applied with a pin or a piece of wire. Plastic cement will not join resin.
