About product

The light cruiser Marseillaise in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter

A plastic kit of the French light cruiser Marseillaise in 1:350 scale from the maker Trumpeter. For ship models 1:350 is a popular compromise: the model is large enough for detailed superstructure, gun turrets and deck equipment, and it still fits a cabinet at home. Marseillaise is at the same time a less usual subject, one that will set a collection apart from the ubiquitous British and German ships.

The real subject

Marseillaise belonged to the light cruisers of the La Galissonnière class, which the French Navy took into service in the second half of the 1930s. They were fast, balanced ships with a main armament of nine 152 mm guns in three triple turrets, completed by dual-purpose guns, torpedo armament and a catapult with a reconnaissance seaplane. In their balance of speed, resilience and firepower they were among the successful ships of their category. Marseillaise ended in November 1942, scuttled by her own crew at Toulon along with other ships of the French fleet, so that she would not fall into other hands.

Building and painting tips

Proceed in units: the hull and the main deck first, then the superstructure and the funnels, and finally the armament and the small equipment. Glue the hull in sections and let them cure, so that no sag appears. The railings, the ladders, the masts and the catapult are a natural place for photo-etched accessories, and the barrels of the main armament can be replaced with turned parts. Spray the paint with an airbrush in thin coats; French ships of the period generally carry lighter gray shades with the deck set apart. Keep the weathering restrained so that it does not suppress the fine engraved detail, and set the model on a stand or into a simple water surface.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of ship models in 1:350 scale
  • those interested in the French Navy of the Second World War
  • modelers looking for a less usual subject for a cabinet
  • builders used to completing a model with photo-etch and turned barrels

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Nine 152 mm guns in three triple turrets, completed by dual-purpose guns and torpedo armament.

Yes, in 1:350 scale a wide range of photo-etched sets, wooden decks and turned barrels is made.

Rather not. A ship model of this size calls for patience in gluing the hull and in fitting the small equipment.
